Cascade bouquets.....

So happy when I travelled to my first stop (sometimes the only stop) of the morning in the blogosphere.....and what did I see? The cascade bouquet I made for Lindsay last June! Right there along with some of my favorite floral artist's bouquets on Botanical Brouhaha!

Happy New Year to my blog readers! Its been a really fulfilling year, ups downs and in between. Want to thank all my clients, family and friends for the great support of my little flower venture called Fleurie.
I love to create pretty flowers for nice people. Thank you for letting me. I appreciate it more than you know. I hope to be involved in more of those special life events for you over the years.

Maybe this explains why it takes me a while to decide on how to proceed with an arrangement.........

Knowing a person's style is definately an advantage when creating a special arrangement. My friend Cindy said: I have this owl...I want it in something for my Thanksgiving table. You know my style. A little country, a little Victorian, oh, and maybe some blue to go with the china...so here is what I came up with:

The Antique Blue Hydrangeas were fantastic! Perfectly matched the fall colors and my bench in the front yard

...and a sweet message too:

"All of your flowers are awesome but I'm in love with this one! Thank you so much!"

I am so blessed to have good friends!

A rustic baby shower

I was asked by one of my favorite long-time customers to provide arrangements for a baby shower. She wanted a rustic, not too baby-ish looking style. After a bit of figuring, here is the results. she loved it and was so complimentary, made me feel so happy to have created just the right thing.

Maggie was there to assist in the detail things that she is so good at! The little ties for the clothespins, the little succulents and moss in the branches, and the cute bees scattered about!

Boy has this blog been hitting a subject on many minds lately. The subject of making changes in your business, and way of thinking, valuing the service we provide, not just providing flowers, but an overall "look". It seems that there are many florists out there doing a lot of introspective examining. I can say I am one of them. It is a hard business, making choices and saying yes maybe too often, especially in the heat of set-up or in that last meeting before setting up the event.
It really struck a nerve to hear of the florist's husband being roped into transporting the bridal party, with thanks of a cigar and handshake and a snide comment. It reminded me of a recent experience of my own, where I didn't stick up for myself and value the service I provide. Always feeling I didn't do enough, or feeling guilty for saying no.
I can say I will give a little more thought into saying yes to add-ons at that last minute, in the heat of the moment. Because I am pretty sure the person asking for these add-ons had no second thoughts about asking or intention of compensating for them.
All said, I absolutely love what I do. I am obsessed with making pretty flowers for nice people. I have great friends to ask for advice. I have a great family that puts up with our home becoming overrun with pretty-flower-making stuff, when it ceases to fit into the studio area. And I have had amazing people trusting me to provide flowers for their most special of occasions.
I am beyond grateful for all this and the new friends it has brought me over the last few years.

Morgen called me on the recommendation of this wonderful couple, Nick and Diane, who I got to see this weekend too!
I had so many loving hands to help on this one. So grateful. At home, most of the week, my right hand flowergal and partner in laughter and mischief, Maggie aka Peg, helped with picking up the flowers, prepping, the fine details of decorating the vases for the hand bouquets, and made the Orchid boxes look great, after I got frustrated with their construction:

The weather was perfect California coastal: a little fog, a little rain, clouds and sunshine.And big thanks go to my hosts for Friday and Saturday, Jim and Sharolyn, it was so wonderful to be with you guys, and the wonderful meals! I made these arrangements at the request of a friend involved in this group- Kings River Conservancy for their annual fund raising dinner party.

Their mission statement:

"To foster community involvement in protecting and enhancing environmental values, to enhance and control public access for recreation, to educate the public on matters related to environmental values, to preserve agricultural lands and to encourage sound public conservation practices along the Kings River corridor from Pine Flat Dam to Highway 99"

I got to use some of the new skills I learned from Francoise Weeks when I attended her workshop in Portland in August

Plants, flowers and cork oak bark were gathered from my garden and the EH unit at Reedley College, wild berries from the river bank, celosia and succulents from a friend.

Visions of flowers, spinning in my head

A busy week ahead, two very different wedding styles to provide flowers for. One, a crisp modern-classic look of white, blues, and greens. The other, a fall palette of coppers, reds, yellow and orange, with a rustic-romantic and textural feel. I am really excited to get the flowers in my studio and get to work! So hard to wait for the flowers to arrive and start playing! Playing in the flowers is what I enjoy the most, ordering and figuring out how many of each- not so fun.

I am happy to have lovely flowers from my garden to add to my crisp-modern look couple's flowers:
pale green lisianthus, white pincushion scabiosa, green cockscomb, dusty miller and champagne grass.
For my rustic-romantic couple, wonderful deep burgandy-red pincushion scabiosa, a coppery celosia and some bright zinnias to add to their flowers.

I like to add a few surprise flowers that are unusual and unexpected, and I love that I can grow those in my own little garden

I'm on Botanical Brouhaha today!

Today, Amy at Botanical Brouhaha posted part one of my story about my experiences at the Francoise Weeks' workshop that I won in a drawing on her blog.
I can't begin to say how thankful and blessed I feel for being able to attend it. The lessons I learned there will have a big effect on my work, how I think about what I do. When working on our own projects after the demonstration of the techniques, Francoise made a point of saying she didn't want us to copy her design exactly, but to make it ours. Such a profound statement: make it your own.

I love most all design styles, and enjoy starkly modern to fluffy victorian styles. In my heart though, I really enjoy a very botanical look, using natural materials. It comes from my horticultural background. I have always enjoyed growing plants. A plant geek at heart. So Francoise's designs speaks to me, her little magical wonderlands carefully composed with all manner of flowers and plant material, sticks, mosses, lichen, mushrooms...I could go on and on.
Thank you Francoise, for inspiring me to do more of what I love to do- making pretty flowers for nice people! You are a great teacher!

And where it ended up: I think I got pretty close to initial concept. These were about 8 feet tall and 3 feet across, using Plum branches from the bride's family farm. The wedding was timed to coincide with the blossom season in March.

a visit to The Melissa Garden

The Melissa Garden is a garden all about bees. Attracting, nurturing, studying, promoting the health of the native bees, honey bees and pollinators. While on vacation in Windsor, CA recently, we had the privledge of visiting this beautiful place located in the hills near Healdsburg among the wineries.
From the moment I stepped out of the car, I was entranced with the setting: a gorgeous mix of flowers springing out among the native oaks and manzanita. The pictures do not do it justice, so hard for me to capture the spirit and color in photos.

A very tranquil spot, insects need water, and there are several fountains on the property to provide a calm spot to pause.

Andrew was nice enough to make the long trip to our house last Saturday to photograph K&L's flowers. (not really a long trip, a short walk, love a small town!)
I am so pleased with the results of his talent and creativity. He made my flower creations really stand out!

Botanical Brouhaha mentioned my bouquet in a post about labeling bouquets for weddings.A good friend recommended this blog recently, and I became a fan immediately. I just couldn't stand it any longer. I had to go there. I went to tillandsia-land, (via cyber-space) I will be selling these strange and wonderful plants at the college's open house, Kaleidescope, next Friday, March 25.
Fleurie will be in the Environmental Horticulture department.
The EH department is having a big plant sale. Many interesting perennials and tomato plants.

I am so thankful for all the support of my floral venture: Fleurie- flowers by L Garza. It has been an exciting and rewarding year. I want to thank all the brides and their families for trusting me with a major element of their biggest day, I am honored that I was asked to provide your flowers.

To all my floral helpers: I couldn't have done it without you! All these ladies have a love for flowers and pretty things that are made from them, and put up with me! Thanks again and again to all of you!

To my family: Nino, I'll bet you didn't know you'd be a flower wrangler did you? I sincerely thank you for all you do to get the flowers out the door and on the road! To my daughters, thanks for keeping me company sometimes late at night as I work, and for the advice when I can't figure out if something is "just right". They have great ideas. To Peg, my sister in heart for all the encouragement and confidence-building you give.

And to my friend Tricia a fellow floral artist and flower-obsessed fanatic, for bringing out and encouraging the creativity in me constantly and for recommending me to your friends and family for their flowers.

The year started off with a gorgeous wedding with a surprise POP of red- the bride's bouquet. The personal and ceremony flowers were all white.

Moving on to a mono-botanical/ monochromatic bouquet of Calla lilies, pink for the bride, white for the bridesmaids.

In April, a cool month with some hot colored bouquets:

a bright color combo of red, orange, green and yellow.

The wedding of my dear friends' son was up next, filled with his bride's choice of

traditional Indian colors of red, orange and white, with a pop of bright green and some yellow added.

Next, a mix of white, blues and purples with a few peacock feathers thrown in for interest, the sweet peas were from my garden

In June, we celebrated the wedding of my sweet niece with these gorgeous colors and flowers. I was thrilled that she loved the same colors as I do, it was so easy to make this wedding beautiful. With much help from friends and family, (you know who you are) it was a hit!

Next, a wedding I got to assist on in Cayucos at Cass House, using lots of herbs from my garden.

We had a nice little vacation there too!

In July, a wedding that made me take another look at purple and lavender, which are not favorite colors of mine, but this warmed me up to the combo. I did the personal flowers for their day. Thanks to the bride who said "do whatever you want I'm sure it will be pretty! I love those words!

A wedding reception for the daughter and son-in-law of my friends Terry and Bev took us to Danville. They were married in Belgium, and came to California for a second reception. It looked like a party in Provence, with a bright palette of golden yellows, purples and blues. Many of the flowers were from my garden.

On to September, and another cooperative effort with Tricia and her family. Had so much fun planning this with my good friend and her sweet daughter! They are all such a creative bunch. Again, my fantastic flower helpers: Amanda, MaryBeth, Gail, Robin, Jill were indispensable! Couldn't have pulled it off without them.

And off to October, at the Victorian Gardens of Two Sisters, a beautiful romantic and modern wedding and reception that I got to create flowers for. Fall colors, but with a softer palette that I loved! Thanks to Amanda for her expert help and ability to read my mind!

Just finished a beautiful wedding at RMBC. Bride's flowers red, all others white. Plum branches from the family's farm in the church arrangements, circled with hydrageas, roses, and stocks in urns and glass cylinder vases. They were large enough to show up nicely in the cavernous sanctuary of the church. See more here

Planting Seeds

Just starting to plant new seeds for the cutting garden this week. I ordered Craspedia Goldstick, Bupleurum, Dianthus "Hollandia", Ebony and Ivory Scabiosa, Ammi visnaga "Green Mist", Helipterum "Pierrot", Carthmus "Zanzibar", Frosted Explosion Grass, Lime Light Millet and Oklahoma, Giant Dahlia and Queen Red Lime Zinnias. For the vegetable garden, a Black Cherry Tomato and some yellow zucchini to start.

Today I am putting together Memorial Day arrangements for a customer. I'll be using alstromeria, white daisies, little yellow sunflower-look daisies, green button mums, purple statice.

This week I harvested my first squash of the season. I planted green zucchini, gold bar, dwarf zucchini, crookneck, straightneck, yellow patty-pan and delicata. Watch out for the squash fairy at a doorstep near you!
I'm still harvesting sweetpeas, though their time is short, with all this heat.
We also picked a few berries from our newly acquired garden at the college. The other berries are a later variety, thankfully. It makes the season longer.
The tomatoes are in their big cages, thanks hon for the help with those.
There are little tomatoes on every plant. We are growing Sungold, Amana orange, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Tigerella, Better Boy. Celebrity, and a few more I can't remember right now.
Peppers of many varieties, cucumbers, eggplant, romano green beans, two kinds of potatoes and watermelons all growing like crazy. Among those Cami and me planted sunflowers for cutting.
The one plant of a birdhouse gourd is growing great too, along with the Indian corn from Jerry. I saved the seed about four years ago and it is still viable. Its a pretty variety with small ears and colored husks- very decorative!
The cut-flower garden I planted last week is coming along nicely. I planted zinnias, statice, burgandy, lime and pink bombay cockscomb celosia, gerbera daisies, and feather celosia.
Still need to plant the hanging amaranthus and a few others. It was so hot when I planted them, they weren't very happy for a few days.
I hope to be able to utilize the blooms for my customer orders, as nice unusual fill-in flowers, to add interest to my bouquets.

I finally out-foxed the forgotten passwords, wrong email address and got into my blog.
Lots of pretty flowers going on and I want to share some pictures.
Below are a few of the bouquets made of flowers from my garden.

Spring is breaking out in my garage/workshop. Some beeeoootiful flowers going on in there.
Kathy ordered five big arrangements for her sweet Mom's funeral. She wanted a big springy garden look. And that she will have. I am really proud of these. And, boutonierres, little mixed flower cuties. No traditional white carnations here.
But no photos to accompany, still can't find USB cable, and card reader won't read. Frustration. Big-time.

A few things I am fond of...

I like to add some elements to a bouquet that are unexpected. Like citrus, as a special request from a client, whose family are citrus growers, and tree fruit to a centerpiece, because the family grows tree fruit.

I like to add unusual foliage, which I have grown in my yard, or the yards of fellow gardening friends to create different textures and patterns. I've even been known to ask strangers if I can cut a few pieces of this or that from their yard (much to the chagrin of my kids) to add to a special bouquet, to give it that look I want.
